Sydney’s café culture is embracing sustainability with the launch of the 'Giving a Puck' program, spearheaded by local coffee icon Single O in partnership with social enterprise Reground.
This pioneering initiative tackles the issue of the 75,000 tonnes of coffee grounds Australians discard annually, which typically end up in landfill, emitting potent methane gas.
Participating cafés and restaurants across Sydney now have access to a convenient collection service that redistributes spent coffee grounds to community gardens.
By enriching local soils, the program helps combat environmental waste while nurturing a circular economy in our suburbs.
The goal is to divert more than three million kilograms of waste over five years — roughly the equivalent of 85 million cups of coffee.
Already, favorite spots like Happyfield, Three Blue Ducks, and Bills have joined, making every cup count toward a greener Sydney.
